Advocacy Volunteer Opportunities
Legislative Committee Member
The legislative committee is comprised of people with mental illnesses and their families and works to influence legislation and public policies that affect the lives of children and adults living with mental illness, their families, and the professionals who care for them. In addition, the committee makes recommendations to the board of directors on position statements. The committee meets monthly. If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Personal Story Contributor
You can connect with legislators and tell your story by testifying at upcoming legislative hearings, writing letters or emails to your state legislators, authoring op-eds for your local paper and by agreeing to be subjects of newspaper articles on through participating in various surveys.
People’s stories about the challenges faced in accessing the mental health system and about what works have an enormous impact on elected officials. If you are willing to share your story – either as a handout during the session or by testifying, please email email@example.com.
Host a House Party
In non-election years, NAMI Minnesota holds house parties where elected officials meet with NAMI members in their home or in a community space to learn about the issues and how mental illnesses impact people’s lives.
Check the calendar for upcoming house parties and email firstname.lastname@example.org to organize one in your community.
