While only 4% of adults in the U.S. lives with a serious mental illness, that number jumps to 15% of men and 30% of women in jail. Minnesota is no exception, in fact, over the last five years, deaths by suicide in Minnesota jails have been twice the national average. Join NAMI Minnesota for a panel discussion with Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell, Melissa Dau from the Suicide Prevention Program at the Minnesota Department of Health, and other stakeholders to discuss barriers and innovations in providing mental health care in jails. With the 2021 legislative session around the corner, we will discuss how we can advocate to divert people with mental illnesses away from incarceration and into treatment, and provide adequate care for those who do move through the system.
