Creating Caring Communities in Minnesota: 5 Things You Can Do
Learn about mental illnesses, the impact of negative attitudes and five things each of us can do to make Minnesota a better place for people who experience a mental illness. This one-hour class is for any community or organization interested in learning about mental illnesses and helping to change attitudes towards mental illnesses.

Family to Family 

Learn about mental illnesses, the brain, treatment, and resources to help a loved one living with a mental illness. Attendees will also build communication skills, reduce stress, find support and discover the common Stages of Emotional Responses when supporting someone with a mental illness. This workshop meets regularly for 8 weeks and is for family and friends of an adult living with a mental illness.

Meets weekly starting Wednesday, September 9 through Wednesday, October 28, 6:30-9:00 PM. Individuals interested in attending this class must contact Susanna Bertelson to schedule a short interview. Meets weekly starting Thursday, September 24 through Thursday, November 19, 6:30-9:00 PM.

Gray Matters: Understanding Depression in Older Adults
Feelings of sadness, loneliness and grief are normal. However, when this sadness is intense, is felt for a long period of time, interferes with our ability to get along with others or to carry out the activities of everyday life…..than it could be depression. Join NAMI Minnesota to talk about risk factors, warning signs, stigma, discrimination, treatment, recovery and resources for depression in older adults.  Suicide prevention resources will also be discussed. Depression is not a normal part of aging. A certificate of attendance is available for this class and will be sent after you fill out the evaluation.

In Our Own Voice
Understand the journey of people with mental illness in recovery. IOOV is a unique public education program in which a trained speaker share compelling personal stories about living with a mental illness and achieving recovery, demonstrating that there is hope for recovery for people with mental illnesses. The presentation includes personal stories and video clips, as well as offering an opportunity to ask questions. The IOOV program has touched many lives and is effective in reducing the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. This 60-minute class is for any groups interested in learning more about mental illnesses and recovery.

Movie Mondays for Mental Illness
Join NAMI film lovers and community educators Kay King and Wil Sampson-Bernstrom (the Siskell and Ebert of mental illness) for Movie Mondays this summer on Zoom. Here’s what you need to do. Watch each of the movies. Be ready to vote with King and Sampson-Bernstrom on how many stars the movie should receive for their handling of the theme of mental illness.  The chat function is restricted so submit your movie comments to our emails (kking@namimn.org or wsampson-bernstrom@namimn.org) at least two days in advance of each discussion. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)
Learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent suicide. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught gatekeeper training program in the United States, and more than one million adults have been trained in classroom settings in 48 states. This class is for members of the community over the age of 16 who want to learn best practices in suicide prevention. A certificate of attendance is available for this class and will be sent after you fill out the evaluation.

QPR for Agricultural Communities
NAMI Minnesota and the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center (UMASH) are partnering to provide suicide prevention classes tailored to farming communities. Our aim is to change the public perception in agricultural communities and better equip the community to identify and help people who may be having thoughts of suicide. We offer a one hour suicide prevention program called QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) to help individuals learn the three steps anyone can take to help prevent a suicide.

NAMI Zoom Classes For Professionals

CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means)
Reducing access to lethal means, such as firearms and medication, can determine whether a person at risk for suicide lives or dies. This program focuses on: how to identify people who could benefit from lethal means counseling, ask about their access to lethal methods, and work with them and their families to reduce access. This class is an evidence-based practice designed for crisis responders, and health, and mental health professionals. A certificate of attendance is available for this class and will be sent after you fill out the evaluation.
